Job Purpose
The SAP Transportation Management / Logistics Execution consultant is responsible for the hands-on functional design, configuration, integration, implementation, enhancement, and Tier 3 support of transportation and logistics capabilities across SAP Transportation Management (TM), SAP Logistics Execution (LE), SAP S/4HANA, SAP ECC, and connected non-SAP transportation platforms.
This position will primarily focus on solution delivery while also providing Tier 3 functional support for SAP TM and LE. The role requires deep understanding of the relationships among order management, delivery processing, shipment execution, transportation planning, freight settlement, carrier invoicing, and financial integration. This role will partner with Supply Chain, Logistics, Finance, Architecture, Integration, Development, and external implementation teams to translate business requirements into scalable, supportable solutions.
How You Make an Impact (Job Accountabilities)
SAP TM/LE configuration and solution delivery (35%)
- Serve as a senior functional subject-matter expert for SAP Transportation Management, SAP Logistics Execution, and related transportation processes.
- Design, configure, enhance, and support SAP TM and SAP LE capabilities for inbound, outbound, and intercompany transportation processes.
- Configure and support SAP TM processes involving transportation requirements created from orders and deliveries, freight units, freight orders, freight bookings, transportation planning and execution, carrier selection, tendering, charge calculation, cost distribution, freight settlement documents, and carrier invoices.
- Configure and support SAP LE processes involving inbound and outbound deliveries, shipping points, routes, shipment documents, shipment cost documents, service-agent selection, shipment cost calculation and settlement, service entry sheets, invoice verification, transfer of transportation costs to accounting, and customer freight billing.
- Configure SAP TM logistics integration for sales documents, purchase documents, stock transport processes, and deliveries.
- Configure relevant SAP TM elements, including freight unit building rules, package building profiles, freight unit types, freight order types, freight booking types, transportation unit types, settlement profiles, charge profiles, cost distribution profiles, planning profiles, selection profiles, incompatibilities, carrier determination, and tendering settings.
- Configure and support Output determination for deliveries, handling units and freight orders (NACE, BRF+, PPF)
- Support applicable transportation scenarios across truckload, less-than-truckload, parcel, ocean, rail, and air modes.
- Evaluate requirements against standard SAP functionality and recommend solutions that minimize unnecessary customization.
- Configure and validate solutions directly rather than functioning only as an advisory or coordination resource.
Project and enhancement execution (25%)
- Lead or execute SAP TM and SAP LE work for implementations, rollouts, enhancements, continuous-improvement initiatives, and system upgrades.
- Lead requirements gathering, current-state analysis, fit-gap or fit-to-standard analysis, future-state design, process modeling, solution design, and functional design sessions.
- Translate business requirements into process designs, SAP configuration, functional specifications, interface specifications, reports, enhancements, workflows, and other development requirements.
- Identify and define required RICEFW objects and collaborate with ABAP, integration, data, reporting, security, and other technical teams to deliver complete solutions.
- Develop test strategies, scenarios, scripts, expected results, and traceability between requirements and testing.
- Perform or coordinate unit, integration, regression, end-to-end, user acceptance, smoke, and upgrade testing, including defect resolution and production-readiness activities.
- Support cutover, deployment, go-live, stabilization, hypercare, and transition-to-support activities.
- Ensure that solutions follow applicable architecture, development, testing, documentation, change-control, release-management, and transport-governance standards.
Level 3 production support and problem resolution (20%)
- Serve as the Level 3 functional escalation point for SAP TM and SAP LE, providing advanced functional expertise for complex, high-priority, or recurring production issues.
- Investigate issues involving deliveries, shipments, shipment cost documents, freight units, freight orders, transportation planning, tendering, charge calculation, freight settlement, service entry sheets, carrier invoices, batch processing, EDI, and system interfaces.
- Perform detailed root-cause analysis across SAP configuration, master data, custom development, integrations, middleware, external transportation systems, and cross-functional dependencies.
- Develop or recommend sustainable corrective solutions and coordinate resolution with Level 1 and Level 2 support resources, SAP functional teams, ABAP developers, integration teams, managed-service providers, software vendors, carriers, and logistics service providers.
- Provide senior functional expertise during critical incidents, including business-impact assessment, workaround identification, solution validation, and clear communication.
- Identify recurring incident patterns, improve troubleshooting documentation, and provide knowledge transfer that enables support resources to resolve similar issues independently.
- Support the transition of new implementations and enhancements into ongoing application support through documentation, knowledge transfer, operational readiness, stabilization, and handoff activities.
- Participate in after-hours Level 3 escalation support and on-call coverage for critical batch processing when required.
Integration and external transportation systems support (10%)
- Design and support integrations among SAP TM, SAP LE, SAP SD, Materials Management, Finance, EWM, non-SAP transportation management systems, logistics service providers, carrier platforms, freight-audit solutions, and transportation-visibility platforms.
- Apply functional knowledge of logistics-related EDI documents such as 856 (Outbound Advance Ship Notice), 858 (Outbound Shipment Information) and 210 (Freight Invoice).
- Understand and evaluate the upstream and downstream effects of TM and LE design decisions across orders, deliveries, shipments, shipment costs, freight units, freight orders, freight settlement documents, service entry sheets, carrier invoices, and financial postings.
- Define process triggers, interface mappings, field transformations, error-handling requirements, reconciliation controls, and monitoring requirements for inbound and outbound transportation interfaces.
- Develop interface definition and mapping documents for non-SAP transportation management systems, third-party logistics providers, carrier platforms, and transportation-visibility solutions.
- Collaborate with integration architects and developers to design and support integrations using APIs, web services, middleware, EDI, IDocs, and event-based integration patterns.
- Analyze interface failures and work with functional, integration, development, middleware, vendor, and external-partner teams to determine whether issues originate in SAP configuration, master data, custom development, mapping, middleware, or an external system.
- Support integrations with BluJay TMS or TM for Shippers when applicable.
Business partnership, documentation, and continuous improvement (10%)
- Review functional designs and proposed solutions from internal and external resources to help ensure they are technically sound, appropriately standardized, and consistent with the overall transportation and logistics solution.
- Work directly with Supply Chain, Logistics, Transportation, Finance, business process owners, key users, and IT colleagues to understand needs and recommend practical SAP solutions.
- Explain SAP TM, SAP LE, and transportation-integration capabilities and constraints clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Identify opportunities to simplify processes, reduce manual work, improve reliability, strengthen controls, and increase the use of standard SAP functionality.
- Perform solution and design reviews for work delivered by internal resources and consulting partners, identifying gaps, unnecessary customization, integration risks, supportability concerns, and opportunities to use standard functionality.
- Prepare and maintain process documentation, configuration documentation, functional specifications, interface documents, test evidence, training materials, and support documentation.
- Deliver knowledge transfer and training to business users, super users, and application support teams.
- Follow organizational requirements for security, compliance, change management, release management, transport governance, and audit support.
